Click and Clack are the nicknames of car mechanic brothers, Tom and Ray Magliozzi. For decades, they hosted a phone in advice show on NPR called "Car Talk". I still enjoy listening to their lighthearted re-runs on podcasts today.
That show is where I got the names for the pair of ravens that check my laneway for treats each morning. Usually a boiled egg or a chopped up hot dog.
Since the ravens look so much alike, I can't tell which is which. Except that their behaviours are very different! If they both fly in together one stands back to let the other eat first. Often, a single raven will approach, check out the offering then fly up to a high perch and call for it's friend. The friend then arrives and gobbles down the treat or flies away with it. What's up with that??!! I can only think that one is very keen on racking up brownie points.

Garden hoses have been put away, winter tires are on my car and the de-icer is back in my metal bird bath. I'm ready for winter. I've even knit a pair of wrist warmers to cover the gap between my house coat's cuffs and fingers. The yarn is 45% alpaca, 25% wool and 30% polyamide. They feel so comfy!

Couldn't resist rescuing this cute little self-seeded pansy from my driveway. Can't recall seeing violas used as house plants before. It will be interesting to see how it likes being inside.

It seems the fall colours were extra gorgeous this year. And outside my kitchen window the staghorn sumacs did not disappoint.
Yesterday Ellie Mae came in with a small mark on her lip. I wonder if a mouse fought back. At any rate, she seems to be hungry for treats but not for her regular canned and kibble cat food. Hunting must be good!

Mice do bite, our son-in-law held one by the tail years ago, to throw it outside, it flipped up and bit his hand!!! That autumn glowing colour, stunning. And wrist warmers, I sew mine in merino fabric, yours are wonderful to be extra long.
ReplyDeletePoor little mice, fighting for their lives! They are food to so many predators. I've got long thin arms, Jean, and really appreciate the extra coverage on cool mornings. I used sock yarn with a wool blend for this pair but will likely knit another, shorter pair in pure merino. Lucky you, having your turn of lengthening days in NZ.
DeleteHaha--Florence, what a treat this was, loved Click & Clack (great photos of that pair) and of course you make EVERY photo special. Love the owl on your counter too and the fall colors. Had to laugh at what you wrote about Ellie Mae, she's both gentle and fierce. Thank you for sharing your latest with us, and great wrist-warmers too.
ReplyDeleteWell Doug, didn't have much to report but simply wanted to post something. (Encouraged by you.) Was amazed how unselfish Click is when it comes to food. Ellie Mae may look like a bit of fluff but you are right about her fierce side.
DeleteFlorence, normally I'd feel a bit guilty nagging you into a new blog--but you've always had a talent for this, taking wonderful photographs and blogging, and I hate to see those talents go to waste. :^)
DeleteHi Florence, so lovely to see a new post. I LOVE Click and Clack! They are gorgeous. I do remember “Car Talk”, great show.Your wrist warmers look lovely.Your little pansy is pretty. One year many years ago I brought in impatience (not spelled right!) and it grew for a few months thru the winter I recall. My cactus is just starting to get buds. I am TERRIBLE with indoor plants, I forget to water them! Your sumac was spectacular. Most of our winter chores are done here too. Just getting new winter tires for the Subaru on Wednesday. I hope Ellie Mae’s boo-boo heals quickly. She sounds a lot like our late Miss Kitty. Beautiful and fierce. Take care Florence!❤️❤️

Hi Robin, thanks for the anticipated shout out! I have the opposite problem with houseplants. I tend to OVER water them. When I was a teenager one fall, I potted a fine leafed wild plant that was growing beside a field. Turned out to a very pretty winter plant pet. And free!! Ha! My wrist warmers were a hit -- with my brother who nabbed them for himself. So I'm knitting another pair for me, this time using 100% merino wool yarn. Knitting while listening to podcasts and audiobooks is now one of my most favourite pastimes. Take care Robin! ❤️❤️ 🧶
DeleteOh wow, I remember Car Talk...I'm not even sure how long ago, but I used to listen to it. I love your wrist warmers, what a great idea. Ellie Mae is such a pretty cat..I sure do miss mine.
ReplyDeleteHi Terri! Thanks for the shout out. I hope your leg is healing well and you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
DeleteHi Florence, just checking in to see how you are doing . I hope you had a nice Christmas.❤️
ReplyDeleteRobin
Hi Robin, I did thank you! Just the way I like it --- quiet. Used the snow blower for the first time this season. I forgot to hang the mice repellant pieces so no surprise, I had to remove a mouse nest from the carb first. Hung the repellant bags after that. Been enjoying embroidering patches to replace worn sections of my heritage quilt. And playing the piano. And watching w-a-y-y-y too much YouTube stuff. Ha! I'm hoping you and Chuck got in some nice hiking adventures.
DeleteThanks for the update Florence! Chuck and I are hiking a couple times a week in
DeletePresqu’ile. Adjusting to Chuck being retired. We had a quiet Christmas too. Take care.❤️❤️
