It's my favourite time of the year. Never was a fan of heat and humidity.
I've been busy clipping back weed trees. Particularly Black Locust and Manitoba Maples. I sleep so much better at night if I've had a good dose of outside work. Not just muscles but lungs and heart benefit as well. Of course, I keep a folding lawn chair, water and snacks handy for many, many breaks.

| Was surprised to see this iris blooming now ... |
 |
| ... since it has already bloomed in the Spring. |
This is the time of year that mice find their way into the house with a view to a winter's digs with central heating.
I have mouse traps set in the basement and in the storage room (where Ellie Mae cannot patrol). A couple of days ago, I placed a trap-killed mouse out on the lawn. Usually, bluejays make off with them almost immediately but this time, they didn't notice it in the grass. Imagine my surprise when a turkey vulture swooped in and nabbed it. I didn't think they would come so close to the house.

| It looks like one vulture is describing the 'one that got away'. |
 |
| Flickers are still here and probing through the lawn. |

 |
| A robin also having a soak, but in my resin bath. |

One evening this summer I had an unexpected bit of excitement.
It was just before bedtime when I decided to wash the dishes. Don't own or even want a dishwasher. The old hand washing method is my preference. I half fill one side of the double sink with warm soapy water and the other side with cold water for rinsing. Then the cleaned dishes are stacked on the drain board tray to air dry.
So I finished up, released the basket drain plugs on both basins and walked away. That's strange, I thought, I feel like I'm walking across a lake!! And I heard water splashing under my slippers. Turned on the ceiling light and there was indeed a lake of water streaming across the kitchen floor! Immediately switched from feeling sleepy and ready for bed to full emergency response mode. I grabbed up towels and sopped and wrung like a super woman! After the floor had been dealt with, I checked under the sink. Both of the ancient sink drains had corroded and dropped away, spilling buckets of dish water onto the floor.
 |
| The old kitchen sink drain decided to collapse mid job. |
The next day, within an hour of my call, the plumber arrived and replaced the sink baskets and installed new drain pipes. It took him only about twenty minutes. I was very impressed with his efficiency. Being an older man, no doubt he has performed this operation many, many times.

I'm still enjoying my new found hobby of knitting. So relaxing and satisfying. After finishing seven pairs of winter and two pairs of summer socks, I'm now eyeing new projects.
My sister gave me a book on winter knitting. In it, some wrist warmers took my fancy. I'll enjoy learning how to knit cable designs.
 |
| Intended to knit this yarn in the winter ... |
 |
| ... but jumped the gun and finished these socks already! |
 |
| My current project. The 100% Merino wool is lovely and soft. |
 |
| One of Ellie Mae's favourite shady hangouts. |
 |
| No wonder she is not particularly hungry these days. |
A friend in Canada knits socks, she says the wool she gets is in two balls, both matching, so the variegated stripes all match up!!! Love the garden beauties. And wrist warmers, I have some in merino fabric with a hole for my thumb.Perfect as the fingertips have freedom to type.!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Jean, Happy Spring to you in beautiful NZ!! Most of the other self striping yarn I used was in 50 g balls, so the socks matched. With the last yarn, 100 g ball, I should have unwound more for the second sock to match the colours. Live and learn. Sure love the comfort and fit of hand knitted socks! And the feel of the yarn as my fingers work the needles. Might make a set of thumb hole wrist warmers, like your's, later on.
DeleteFlorence I am so sorry for not being here recently, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this post. But i'm very sorry about your sink! Loved the birds and flowers, your pretty stockings and the wonderful if not deadly Ellie Mae. Please keep posting, I look forward to talking to you again. ❤️
ReplyDeleteI so much appreciate your encouragement, Doug! And I sure hope your health is continuing to improve. I've been hearing many reports of 'Long COVID' and how lingering and energy sapping it can be! A wretched, mean virus!!! As I type this, Ellie Mae is pressed into my side on the couch and purring happily after a nice salmon supper. Domestic bliss! Looking forward to your recovery and continued reports from your teepee and the senior center. ❤️❤️
DeleteHi Florence, pardon my late response to your post. We have been in Niagara on the Lake this week and I hardly had a chance to look at my iPad. Your flowers are continuing to be incredible! We too saw some iris blooming this week. I never have seen iris blooming in the fall. So many gorgeous birds you have. Chuck and I continue to walk early in the morning. Most mornings in NOTL we would hear owls hoo-hooing. Your socks are gorgeous. Merino wool wrist warmers??? Wow, you will be snuggly warm this winter. Ellie Mae, your are a fierce hunter!😻 I am sorry you had a flood in your kitchen. Any idea how old your pipes were? We had a similar thing happen in our last house but with a brand new dishwasher. We were not impressed! Take care Florence and talk soon.❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteRobin
How wonderful to hear owls calling while at Niagara-On-The-Lake! Must have been their family members touching base. Robin, the drain pipes were the original ones installed by my Dad, perhaps seventy years ago. Made of lead and much patched, they certainly had a long career. Luckily, I was able to mop everything up before the water damaged my newish flooring. Yes, Ellie Mae loves to hunt mice. We all need out hobbies! Ha! Glad you and Chuck are enjoying your morning walks. Trees about to show their party colours. Thanks for the update, Robin. ❤️❤️
DeleteHi Florence, just checking in to see how you are doing. October was a crazy month here. Had a new ensuite put in. It took quite awhile with a lot of waiting for drywall mud, tiling, grouting….we are almost done. Just waiting for the glass shower doors to be installed. Then Chuck and I were both hit with Covid. Chuck has gone back to work today after a week off. I need a couple more days at home yet. The weather has been incredible. We both felt pretty good yesterday and did a couple hour hike in Presqu’ile.
ReplyDeleteHope you have been well Florence. Talk soon.❤️❤️
Robin
Thank you so much for the latest, Robin! Wow, a new ensuite! The only home improvement I did this year was having new eaves put on my garage. So sorry to hear you guys were hit with COVID. It certainly seems to be lingering around the planet. Glad you were able to enjoy a good hike in Presqu'ile though. I've been spending nice days pruning out overgrown cedar hedges now that nesting season is over. Feeder birds (and two ravens) are increasing their visits here for grub. I especially love the cute little dash-and-grab chickadees. Anyway, I'm doing okay, just a tad short on post-worthy content. ❤️❤️ 🦉
DeleteThanks for the update Florence, glad to know you are ok.❤️❤️

Hello Florence. I have been looking for a place to plant a white iris much like the lovely one you posted. Brecks has a white rebloomer called Immortality (Reblooming Tall Bearded Iris) which appears to be much like yours. - Kathy
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy! Your comment prompted me to check my records. My white iris, which I bought two years ago, is indeed called 'Immortality'. I didn't know that they bloom in both Spring and Fall. A very nice surprise!!!
DeleteHi Florence! I know I already commented here, but just wanted to say hello and that I was thinking of you, and hoping all is well (and you're not dealing with another emergency). We usually get a new post from you the first of the month, you know... ;^)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, Doug! Just when I thought nobody would notice if I slinked off into the sunset, you give me this 'wellness check'. All is well with me -- thank you for asking -- just have not taken many pictures lately. Perhaps I should blog more often with smaller posts. ❤️❤️ 🦉
