For the most part, I'm just going to mow over the messy patches with my lawn mower and let nature take it's course. But I've decided to take advantage of the free 'tilling' and sow some annual flower seeds in one of the sections.

My lovely winter-long holiday of lounging about indoors are coming to an end. I'll soon have to slap on my groundskeeper hat and get busy. Last week I inspected and cleaned all twenty-five of my nest boxes. Was surprised to see that one of the boxes contained the distinct furnishings of a bluebird. Namely, a thick starting layer of pine needles.
This year I intend to clear out an overgrown nature trail in one of the fields. I may need some repairs to the tractor that I use with my bush hog implement.

I'm still embroidering and adding patches to the quilt that my sister made decades ago.
Also ordered cotton blend yarn to knit a few pairs of summer socks. I've definitely been on a needle-work kick.

Hi Florence, and Happy Easter! Loved all your nature photos (and now I can call that robin at the top a robin and get it right), as always your pictures are amazing. Yuck on the grubs but that's nature for you--so is that red bird on the rusty feeder a cardinal? Anyway, it's good that winter's ending and you can be out and about again, where you belong--just like Ellie Mae. :^)
ReplyDeleteGlad to read that you are feeling better, Doug. Ha! I was thinking of you when I tossed that picture of the robin at the top. Yes indeed, the red bird is a male northern cardinal. And he's going all out with his territorial singing these days. Nice to have his music while working outdoors. Yes, Ellie Mae is back in her element! Mice hunting is her passion in life. 99% of it is just sitting and listening for rustles in the grass. Those grubs must be driving lawn-proud folk absolutely bonkers!
DeleteWhat a sweet cat!
ReplyDeleteGrubs, good food, but what a pain!
25 nest boxes??!!
I'm guessing by sweet cat, you mean my rescue, Ellie Mae. If you meant my embroidery work, then thank you! Yes, those grubs really took their toll on lawns in my area. But I'm imagining happy skunks with full bellies. Actually Jennifer, I have more than twenty-five nest boxes. Twenty-five bluebird/tree swallow boxes PLUS an owl box, a couple of wren boxes and a few for chickadees/nuthatches. I'm obsessed!!! Unlike you, I have no boxes for ducks.
DeleteHi Florence, what lovely photos! Our lawn too has been dug up by skunks. Like you I am not too fussed about it. I read somewhere the other day red winged blackbirds can hide their red shoulders when they need too. How interesting! For our 40th wedding anniversary last month Chuck got me a new bird feeder pole. It can hold four bird feeders and is “guaranteed “ to be squirrel proof. I am looking forward to having it up. The price of bird food is incredible! Chuck is going to build me a couple trough feeders like you have and I will put peanuts in them for the squirrels.Haven’t seen any red squirrels yet but a rabbit has been hanging around. First time in a couple years. We too have a lot of coyotes and foxes in our neighbourhood. On our early morning walk a few days ago we saw a very healthy looking fox on a neighbours front lawn. Your quilt is so beautiful.I love your embroidery. Today it is 50° here. On our walk before lunch we noticed a few forsythia bushes are already blooming. Isn’t that crazy? Look at Ellie Mae, she is gorgeous. Miss Kitty has been enjoying the sun on our back deck too. Sorry for rambling on!😆😆
ReplyDeleteTake care Florence.❤️❤️
Robin
Happy 40th Anniversary to you and Chuck!!! Obviously an excellent partnership! Would love to know how your 'squirrel proof' feeder pole works out. There are some pretty smart and resourceful squirrels out there! I've seen the redwings looking pure black as they forage about. Then suddenly the urge will take them to erect their scarlet and yellow shoulder patch feathers. I guess the brighter, the higher the rank of the owner. Yes, bird feed is getting pretty expensive so when I see grackles and red-wings starting pig out, I take down all but one feeder. It's weighted for only light weights like chickadees, nuthatches and finches. So nice to welcome back our migrating friends and watch our flowers wake up. As always, I can't resist buying packets of seeds. Gonna give it my best shot at sweet peas this year. Now who's rambling on?! Take care, Robin and Happy Spring.❤️❤️
