February Notes

February has treated us to lovely and exceptionally mild days, but then last night yanked away the sweetness and slammed us with bitter cold and high, destructive winds. My lights flickered off then back on but my sister, who lives 17 miles away, lost power for two hours. The next several days are forecast to be warm and pleasant so it appears that March will come in like a lamb. How it will behave and depart could be another matter entirely.

A robin has returned to my yard, along with red wing blackbirds, starlings and grackles.

A wanderer returns.

A screech owl used the roost box a few times this month. It has a different tabby pattern on it's forehead than the owl visiting in January so I know there are at least two of them here. A few nights ago I could hear one calling. Sounded like the distant whinny of a colt.

Catching some late afternoon rays.
Looks like a happy little face to me.

There is quite a decrease in seed consumption at my bird feeders now as insects become available on mild days. Crows can always be relied on to quickly remove unwanted kitchen scraps.

I didn't like these meatballs but the crows thought they were fine.
Chicken scraps today. Also gratefully received.
Yummy! Peanut butter and suet mixture.
Colour coordinated beak and legs. Matching shoes and cape.
Love those junco eyelashes.

BritBox is a streaming service I've subscribed to for many years now. Sometimes weeks will go by without any new content interesting me. But I hit the jackpot this month when they streamed "The Repair Shop". It shows specialists restoring family heirlooms of all kinds. I absolutely love it!!! The accompanying history of each item is always interesting and the restorations are amazing.

I noticed clumps of rabbit fur littering the snow just outside my kitchen window. At first I thought that a couple of cottontails had gotten into a fisticuff. But then I inspected the scene and saw splatters of blood and what I believe were the paw prints of a fisher. An unwitnessed drama. There are still at least three rabbits frisking about but likely the population has been reduced by one.

Clumps of rabbit fur and spatters of blood in the snow.

Prints that look very much like those of a fisher.

Still enjoying my winter needle work. Knitting socks (soon to start pair number six) and patching blocks on a quilt. I like how this little fox patch turned out. Snoozing blissfully despite wolf and polar bear neighbours.

  1. You've been busy!
    That was quite the storm.
You've more birds than we do. I haven't seen a robin in ages.
Our rabbit is MIA. I'll bet that is what happened to her.
    Happy nearly spring!

    1. It sure was a stormy night! Pine branches down everywhere this morning. I hate strong winds!! So destructive! I've been enjoying your critter pics, Jennifer. Including your trail cam fisher sightings. A few years back I saw one foraging along a ditch. It didn't notice me until quite close and then dove into the water and disappeared. Cute little round ears. Just making a living like us all. Last winter a robin stayed here throughout. Not so this time. Happy nearly Spring, Jennifer.

  2. I sound like a broken record here, but Florence your photography is wonderful. (I'm in my bathroom right now with the lights off to see your pics on my Samsung tablet!) Loved seeing that robin, happy owl and the peanut butter-suet for those sweethearts was so kind on your part. Your tv show sounds really good too, and right up your alley! You're right about a milder February but it looks like you still got more snow than southwestern Pa. Anyway, love your post as always and please keep these coming for us nature-deprived folk, haha :^)

    1. Robin? What robin? Do you mean the first snap in which there is a red-winged blackbird? Perhaps you way-y-y over credit my photos. Haha! I loved the Repair Shop so much that I binge watched the two series BritBox streamed. Now thirsting for more which I can find bits of on YouTube. Gotta confess Doug, I watch too many videos. Not good for me to get too comfortable on the old couch. Wish I had your self discipline for exercise. So far this winter, I've only used my snowblower twice. 👍

    2. Florence, my bad! Yes I meant that first pic--and I'm sure you're being too hard on yourself in regards to your videos! 🙂

    1. I'm so smitten with those screech owls, Jean. They remind me of tabby kittens and not much bigger. Hope all is well with you in beautiful NZ.

  4. Hi Florence, I love your critter photos! We were walking in Presqu’ile Park earlier in the week and heard the red winged blackbirds. So early! Wasn’t that cold front a shock?? We went from 55° Wednesday at noon to 15° Thursday morning. A chilly walk yesterday. Your birds have lovely meal selections. Our birds here just don’t seem to care for store bought suet. A neighbour and I have both tried. Maybe I should try making my own. The Repair Shop show sounds so interesting. Poor bunny! I know everyone has to eat but….Your needlework is beautiful. The little fox adorable! My Mum was so crafty. At a yard sale years ago I found a beautiful tablecloth but it had small holes here and there all through it. Mum said buy it, I will fix it. I left it with her for a few days. Oh. My. Goodness. She embroidered flowers and bees all over it. I love it and cherish it. For the last ten years her arthritic hands, along with her diminishing eyesight, have hurt too much to do anything like that. It looks like a lot of March is going to be above normal temps too Florence. Enjoy it!❤️❤️

    1. Hi Robin. I can just imagine how nice your walk in Presqu'ile Park was. Been there. Top quality hiking! Yes, Wednesday\Thursday was quite the teeter totter! Awful, destructive winds! I felt sorry for the early returning birds. I find the same with store bought suet so I just melt a block of lard and stir in several big dollops of peanut butter. Your Mom's needle work on that tablecloth sounds wonderful. I guess one reason I'm knitting so many socks (besides enjoying it) is to have a supply of them for my future diminished self. Ha! Well, I've got so much outside work planned that I sure hope March is nice. As always Robin, I sure do enjoy our little e-chats. ❤️❤️
