Bad Dreams

This morning I woke up, still furious, from a dream that my car was stolen for the umpteenth time. First thought, my car is parked, safe and unfiltched, in the garage. Second thought, a mad man is slaughtering the people of Ukraine.

I'm one of those folk who dreams every single night and who remembers the dreams in detail. In most of my dreams, I'm trying to remember which apartment I live in or where I left my purse or my car. Rarely, but sometimes I have super powers that wow onlookers. I can fly (just lean into the wind, lift my feet and soar) or swim as fast as a speed boat with big black flippers on my feet. Or discover that I'm quite a good ice skater. But most of my dreams are unpleasant and frustrating.

In reality I did have a car stolen -- twice in fact. It was my cherished 1979 Chev Malibu both times. Taken from the basement parking area of the high rise apartment building I once lived in. In the first instance, the car was recovered by the police. Abandoned with an empty fuel tank, no hub caps, a punched out steering column and my tool box gone from the trunk. I had the car repaired but not long after it was stolen again. This time, involving a high speed chase in which the police shot out a back tire before the thief crashed and wrecked the poor vehicle beyond repair. Luckily, no humans were hurt.

I loved that Malibu but unfortunately it was just too tempting for the klepto set. Now I drive boring but practical economy type cars. Easy on gas with tires small enough for me to change myself and (bonus) snubbed by thieves!!!

The living nightmare in Ukraine continues on. Beyond sad.

Last night's substantial dump of snow.
One of the first returning Red-winged blackbirds.
A metal feeder that this red squirrel cannot chew up.
The blue jay would prefer an open type feeder.
A scrappy Common Redpoll dominates his feather-weight class.
A milder-mannered Cardinal fueling up. Female Junco at right.
Exercise awaits. I do like my new, two-handled shovel.

  1. Florence, I so much enjoyed your sharing your dreams--I'm not at all surprised you have such vivid ones, or can recollect them, that's the artist in you! Y'know, I'm not a car enthusiast but boy do I remember the 1979 Chevy Malibu, most models would still look good today! How awful about yours being stolen twice, my God! On a happier note, loved seeing the red squirrel & bluejay! We got that same snow here in Pittsburgh last night, around 6 inches of it. Sorry for my long ramble, but I dig your 2 handle shovel too, no pun intended! :^)

    1. Oh Doug, that Malibu was a honey! A rich dark red colour with a great sound system. Lots of room to haul furniture and peppy as all get out! I kept it waxed and shining. But really, the last thief did me a favour. My subsequent cars are Toyota compacts. Far more practical and the front wheel drive works much better on steep, snowy driveways such as mine. Glad to hear your taste and smell senses are recovering.

    2. I was just looking at that car courtesy of Google, and admiring a deep red model. Well, at least you experienced some real joyriding before your practical side took over, haha! PS. I apologize for all the exclamation marks in my first comment, I was just happy to see a new post on your blog :^)

    3. Exclamation marks are important, Doug. I think I speak with an exclamation pointed accent. Well, definitely not with a valley girl question mark up turn, anyway. Got to post something at least once a month just to prove to friends I'm still alive!!! :^)

  2. Down here there is a saying" If you work for the County Council, you need a shovel that is armpit height" sadly, that means you can lean on it more than using it. The Red Cardinal, they are such a lovely deep colour in your winter.

    1. Hah! Never heard that one before, Jean. Actually, we got enough of a snow dump to merit use of my snow blower. Tomorrow if the wind dies down. It shouldn't be too long now before Mother Nature turns up this hemisphere's thermostat and melts the white stuff.

  3. Me too on the vivid dreams and the stolen car frustrating ones. With the stolen car (it is always my former 74 VW bug) and I spend the night on foot hunting it. As for flying, I haven't had a flying dream in a long time. Sure miss those dreams. Those would come in handy if they happened the same time as my car is stolen but they don't:)
Hopefully the snow melts for you and you don't need that handy dandy shovel. Our three inches came Friday and totally melted by yesterday afternoon.

    1. Oh, I needed that laugh, Patti. I can just picture myself soaring around while searching for the car. Unfortunately, I'm always furious in the theft dreams and only get to fly in the tranquil ones. A psychiatrist would have a field day with my brain. Aw, your 74 VW bug had so much character! Another car dream I have too often is that I buy some 'beater' and discover the brakes don't work as I frantically dodge heavy city traffic. ARgghhhh!!!!

  4. Hi Florence, loved hearing about your dreams! For years every once in awhile I had a dream I couldn’t find my way home. All sorts of scenarios with the same conclusion. I finally had a dream where I found my way home and that was that for that dream!😆
Your poor Malibu! A friend had a powder blue one, great car. Our everyday car is a boring little four door but my summer car is a red MX-5. I love driving it and it is tucked up in the garage at this moment.
Your birds are lovely. The red winged blackbirds and grackles seemed to come back so early this year.
    Have a good week.❤️❤️

    1. Oh, wow Robin! A sporty Mazda roadster for summer driving. Indeed a special pet! How interesting that you resolved the lost scenario within a dream. Maybe there is hope for me yet. This morning flocks of red wing black birds are making short work of the bird seed. My smaller resident birds are not happy about it.

  5. Thanks for sharing your dreams. I dream when I sleep on my back..I think...I am often going somewhere or trying to get somewhere on time. Mildly upsetting. Sometimes I'm shopping and those are nice dreams. Meanwhile, I drove a Malibu for over 10 years and it did not have any adventures at all like yours. I have the same birds here but have not seen a red winged blackbird yet. Two robins have been around. Raining and miserable today but good as it is moving the snow out!

    1. Now that has me thinking, Jocelyn, because it seems to me when I awake from an angry dream, I seem to be on my back as well. I've never dreamed about rushing for an appointment but I do frequently find myself working to meet a press deadline. A definite vestige from my magazine production employment. Planted my tomato seeds this morning. Winter holidays winding down. Spring chores just around the corner. Yay-y-y. I've gotten way to fond of the couch.
