Sweeties

As a winter experiment, I planted some Grand Rapids leaf lettuce seeds. Even with grow lights, it took all of two and a half months to reach harvest stage. Tasty but not nearly enough production to keep lettuce off my grocery list. I think I'll try different varieties next time. Actually, I prefer the crunch of romaine lettuce on my vegan BLTs.

It's Valentine's Day so here are a few snaps of my sweeties:

Of course you knew, I'd be featuring my screech owl!
Such an intense look on that wee face!
This American Robin has kept me company all winter.
Having a long reign for a tom cat, Romeo is still around.
Yes Ellie May, he really does fancy you!
In fact, he's left perfume for you on my riding mower's tire ...
... as well as here, there and everywhere!!

  1. Romeo, true to any Tom's parking ticket!! Love the owl, do you see other ones, or just this breed? Ellie May, you have the sweetest face, stay warm.

    1. Several other species of owls live here, Jean, but I seldom spot them. Plenty of mice and voles in the fields provide a good living for them. Ellie Mae sleeps on top of my head every night during cold weather. In the summer she stays out for nocturnal adventures. An excellent companion!

  2. Hum, do you suppose Romeo is anticipating summer and visiting Ellie Mae. He is just letting her know he is available. Bet that message is in the stinky note he left her on the tire.

    1. Romeo is certainly hormone driven, Patti. It won't be long until he starts again with his love songs out on my deck. (sigh)

  3. That lettuce looks delicious and I loved seeing that robin's red breast, what a pop of color in this gray winter! I gotta say I'm not too impressed with that scruffy Romeo but Ellie Mae is wow! More gorgeous than ever... 🙂👍♥️ Florence, keep these pictures coming 😊

    1. I don't think Elle Mae is impressed by Romeo, either. I'm just surprised that a younger tom-cat has not dethroned him by now. The lettuce was tasty but not enough to justify the 12 hour a day grow lights. As soon as the weather warms I must get out and about for a change in camera fodder. I do appreciate your encouragement! Happy Valentine's Day, Doug!

  4. I have to giggle at the tire. Our 'feral' visitor has stopped doing that.
I spotted 3 robins today. We've had just one (I think!) for a month.

    1. For the past week I've seen a female robin with the male as well, Jennifer. They are making sure they have first dibs on nesting rights here.

  5. Hi Florence, I loved your owl photos, so sweet. Poor old Romeo, he looks like he needs a bath. Do you feed him at all? I heard someone yowling on our back deck last night. He leaves his perfume on my log table!
Wonderful to have fresh lettuce in the middle of winter but as you say a lot of work.
The expression on Ellie Mae’s face is hilarious.
    Take care.❤️

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Robin. No, I do not feed or encourage Romeo. In fact I clap my hands at him if I encounter him on my walkabouts. I suspect he comes from one of the nearby farms. If Ellie Mae encounters a female cat outside, she puts the run on it. Live and let live, I say.

  6. Love those owl photos. I saw a flash of red the other day and got excited...what bird could it be. It was a robin, unusual for February here but I was happy to see him. Hopefully he is weathering today's snow storm okay.

    1. Glad you enjoyed my owl snaps, Jocelyn. As you know, I'm quite besotted with my screech owls. I saw that my overwintering male Robin had a female join him last week. They will certainly have first dibs on nesting sites.

    1. How kind of you to check on me Patti! Yes, I'm fine except for being heartsick over the plight of poor Ukraine. What a great leader they have, though. Funny that we both commented on Doug's post at exactly the same time. Thanks for the 'wellness check'! I really appreciate your kindness.

  8. Hi, new here, I just wanted to echo your sentiments regarding the Ukraine president! It is good to see this leader holding up so well under such horrible conditions! He seems to be a good guy. I love your owl photos! Thank you! Ruth
