I've been busy clearing away unruly trees and shrubs from the lane to our bush lot as well as the bird box trails. Prickly ash and dogwood bushes are the main culprits that if unrestrained will gleefully become roadblocks. Call to duty the bush hog, chain saw and clippers!
If not parked in the shade, I make my own shade with a tarp over the cargo bed and a curtain stretched across the sunny side. The bench seat and backrest are lovely and comfortable for taking iced tea and snack breaks.
During these breaks I love to run my smart phone's bird sound identity app. I had observed most of these birds around me but the Warbling Vireo was a surprise.
Each recording lists the birds it hears and highlights each bird detected in real time. (I'm becoming less sad about giving up my flip phone.) Here is a screenshot of what "Merlin Bird ID" is hearing these days:
On the evening of June 26th, I had a special treat.
At dusk I looked out the kitchen window and saw a mother raccoon with her passel of five youngsters. Checked a short time later to see where they went but saw something else instead.
A doe was laying down and licking her newborn, twin fawns. It was too dark for taking pictures. Also, there was a window screen and foliage in the way. But through binoculars I watched the spotted fawns as they explored their new world on unsteady young legs. Eventually the doe stood up and the dainty youngsters nursed. Midsummer sweetness!!!
Yesterday I noticed a large patch of wild blackberries. I picked enough to make a pie but decided to just enjoy them fresh from the brambles. So luscious and flavourful!!! More midsummer sweetness!!!
Since I no longer own a dog, the cottontail rabbits feel quite safe in the backyard. When I'm outside, they pretty much just ignore me and go about their munching business. I certainly enjoy their company.
Life here has been a joy. Friends dropping by, nightly firefly shows, young birds growing up and flying free, yummy root beer floats and pretty summer bouquets. All midsummer sweetness!!!!

Beautiful flora and fauna, what a delight to see them all.And a Kubota that does a magnificent job.
ReplyDeleteI think I love my Kabota more each day, Jean. If I forget to pack something, no big deal. The Kabota will just whiz me back home in a jiffy. ❤️🦉
DeleteHi Florence, thanks for doing this post! Thank you too for your kind words about my Mum. I miss her everyday. I still reach for the phone to call her. Your photos are lovely. My friend Kim was here last week and we did a couple Presqu’ile walks. She has the bird app too. Fascinating to learn which birds are around. We have an explosion of rabbits this year. Everywhere you look are rabbits!🐇 I spotted a patch of wild blackberries at Proctor Park a few days ago. I must go back to see if they are ripe. Love the animal baby photos and to see the doe and her fawns, wow! I am so glad you are having a wonderful summer Florence.❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteRobin
So glad that you and Kim shared some quality time together, Robin. Moral support means everything after a personal loss. I almost always see a rabbit or two now. All sizes. I have a lot of clover in my lawn (which I grew when I kept honey bees) and it seems to be their favourite food. Mom used to bake pies that were half black and half red raspberries. My brother still drools when he thinks of those pies. I'd rather just scarf them down fresh off their canes. It has been a good year for them. ❤️❤️🦉
DeleteWonderful photos, Florence! As a kid I used to pick blackberries with my grandma every summer, those looked awesome! Love seeing the raccoon family and rabbits too, I hope they're safe from that ferocious Ellie Mae 😉
ReplyDeleteSweet memories of picking blackberries with your grandma, Doug! So flavourful but must be careful of the thorny canes. Ha! Ellie Mae is only a threat to poor defenceless little mice. Now an elder girl with fewer teeth, she prefers roasted chicken or canned salmon. These days I'm loving my root beer floats. Been stopping by your posts Doug, but arriving too late to add anything new comment wise. Happy summer!!!! ❤️❤️🦉
DeleteHow delightful it is! I could use one of those machines, too!
ReplyDeleteI highly recommend you get one, Jennifer. It has a comfortable, shaded bench for two and your pruning tools can just stay handily in the cargo bed. Been enjoying your "mini-Freds" and trail camera captures. Happy summer!!! ❤️❤️🦉
DeleteFlorence, what a absolute delight of a post! I concur with all your examples of delights this time of year. I have had several families with young through our grounds as well. One wishes them well. Showed Tony your side by side...really nifty!
ReplyDeleteThat RTV is not just a little workhorse but nice to take friends on tours with. I even use it to drag fallen trees (if not too big) off my paths. No longer young enough to take long walks I can still enjoy a good trail ride. By the way, I still have not seen a barred owl in person but heard one calling in our bush lot this Spring. Felt like replying, "No one cooks for me! I cook for myself!" I know you often see them in your patch. Happy summer, Jocelyn! ❤️🦉
