January Jabber

Another month has whizzed by already. Must be enjoying myself for time to speed like it does!

Except for one day and evening of gale force winds, our winter has been fairly gentle -- so far. I've only used the snowblower twice this season. The last time a shovel would have sufficed.

Ellie Mae and I have been watching our winter bird life. Me, admiring and wishing them well. Can't vouch for her thoughts.

The Eastern Screech Owl has been using the roost box every so often. A safe hideout from hawks, crows and jays as well as a larder for storing food. No doubt it has different hunting territories that it cycles though and when it is here, the smaller birds certainly protest.

After dark a few nights ago, I watched it perched on a mountain ash tree branch, scanning the snow for signs of mice. My Canon camera barely had enough light to capture his/her silhouette. Surprised my camera captured the little owl at all as it really was quite dark out.

My little friend starting his/her night shift.

The lower the temperature dips, the more demand on my suet feeders. I make my own blocks by melting lard and stirring in peanut butter and a small handful of cornmeal.

Tanking up on high fat nourishment.

These guys look like they are playing 'teeter-totter'.

Beside keeping myself entertained with television, internet, piano practice and phone gabs, I've been doing some sewing. I'm making good progress with repairing worn fabrics on my heritage quilt. Some of the blocks have all frayed so I've made 9 patch flimsies (although with flannelette plus an under pad, they are not so flimsy). I'm pleased with how they turned out and the continued overall style of the original design.

Also, using an old apron as a pattern, I made a new one, with more generous pockets. Lots of room to stash eye glasses, cell phone, seed packets, clothes pegs, etc.

  1. Hi Florence--it sure is nice to see your monthly post, I've missed you. So good seeing Ellie Mae again! Love your roost box with that screech owl and the smaller one too, you are still one with nature I see. Your heritage quilt just looks awesome, as does your work apron. You are so dang resourceful. :^)

    1. Thanks Doug! I've always enjoyed working with my hands. Didn't mention that I also knitted a draft-stopping winter scarf for my north facing kitchen window sill. Boring domestic stuff. I much prefer reading actual person to person interactions like your social adventure posts.

  2. Hi Florence, lovely to see a new post. Ellie Mae looks gorgeous! Love her perch on the window sill. When Chuck and I were first married we lived in housing provided by the military. The windows had no sills. Pretty well flush with the walls. At first our cat Linus could only sit in the windows when they were open. Luckily I found a few chairs that were the same height as the sills so he could look out. We moved into our first home and Linus was in heaven. Big, wide window sills, he would lay for hours at a time. Your owl is beautiful. They are such interesting creatures. Your quilt is looking incredible. Love your new apron! I have pretty good luck finding great ones at our local thrift shop, a lot of times handmade ones
. Most of them do have very generous pockets. We are certainly having a different winter than last year. Wasn’t that wind storm crazy?? I think we had one hundred sticks fall off our newly trimmed maple tree!😆 Lots to clean up in the Spring. We did a hike in Presqu’ile yesterday and saw so many deer. We have quite a bit of snow after getting about eight inches a couple days ago so it was a good workout walking the trails. Take care Florence and lovely to hear from you.❤️

    1. Hi Robin. Wow, your newsy comment would have made a great post for a blog in itself. (I miss your photo journal of neighbourhood walks.) Glad you accommodated Linus with window viewing. Ellie Mae has several but unless very bad weather prefers to be out and about. I used to do a lot of sewing and still have material that was meant for office clothes that I never got around to making. So the light blue cotton fabric was just begging to be used. Yes, that wind storm was indeed crazy. High winds always make me unsettled and nerved up. I think the winds are getting stronger each year. Anyway, I'm enjoying this very cold and dry air. The snow was extra squeaky under my boots this morning. I love that sound! Great chatting with you Robin! ❤️❤️🦉

    2. Forgive me for butting in, but I enjoyed Robin's newsy feedback as well. Just wanted to say I love you guys, and I'm sick to my stomach with Trumps tariff attacks on our closest neighbors. I saw on another blog this morning where Canadians were boycotting liquor from Kentucky and Tennessee, 2 BIG trump states and I hope that becomes a nationwide thing there. Okay, that's it. Talk to you both again soon. 🙂❤️❤️

    3. Can't understand Trump's unbridled trade animosity towards Mexico and Canada. Not in anybody's interest, really! Didn't know about the liquor boycott but doubt it would have any impact at all. Sure hope I live to see the political pendulum swing back to a kinder/sensible mindset. Gotta remind myself that almost half of our good neighbours to the south are NOT on board with the madness. Thanks for the reminder of the continuing good will and friendship of Americans like yourself!! ❤️❤️🦉
