After almost a year on order, my four new doors have finally been installed. I'm pleased with them. They have the satisfyingly solid 'thunk' in closing which signifies a good seal. The hardware in the colour I wanted (Venetian Bronze) is still on back order so they used temporary ones in a Brushed Nickle finish.

The West doors are also vulnerable to our often gale force prevailing west winds. Here are the two new doors on the West side of the house.

| The West kitchen door leads to an enclosed porch. |
The back porch door is inside the garage, up a small flight of steps. It's the one that I and visitors mainly use to enter and exit the building. It's glass is clear but I just didn't like the lack of privacy so applied a swirly patterned opaque film.

I mentioned to the installer that the east wind here can be very strong, with no buildings or trees to slow it down. He said that no doors are absolutely wind proof. Sure enough, the first strong east wind did slide in drafts, though much diminished, around the east doors. Disappointing but not altogether unexpected.
Since the installers live in rural areas nearby, I asked them about invasive Asian Lady Beetles. I supposed that being experts on sealing windows and doors, they would have thwarted the pests. But no!!!! They said the beetles also get into their homes. Well that was disappointing to hear. Still, I'm certain my new doors will at least help diminish the volume of the cursed little beasties.

Glad Ellie Mae's vet visit is over with. She was dropped off in the morning to allow the vet time to give her a tranquilizer shot and allow it to take effect before she could be handled. She was given a parasite treatment and vaccines. The vet advised me that Ellie was over weight and asked what I fed her. I told the woman that I fed Ellie roast chicken in the morning and canned cat food in the evening as well as free choice kibble and cat treats a few times a day. The vet said, "Absolutely no more roast chicken. Limit her to 260 calories a day." (I didn't mention the cheese or the smoked oysters.) Ellie stayed away from the house and me for three days after her forced vet visit. Then she came and told me all was forgiven.

My old wooden Adirondack chairs had reached their end of service. I had repaired them numerous times, but they had finally just disintegrated beyond rescue.
So I replaced them with ones that I'll never have to paint or repair again. (Say I, optimistically.)
They are made from recycled high-density polyethyene and fold for storage. It's just as well they can stay out in winter because they weigh a hefty fifty-two pounds each! I like that they are made in the U.S.A. so transport was not from the other side of the planet.

Another recycled product I bought was these rubber curb sections. They are four feet long, weigh ten pounds each and are manufactured in Canada. I can just imagine all those used tires and the miles they must have travelled in their previous lives.

Entertainment wise, I thoroughly enjoyed Good Omens, a British fantasy comedy released in 2019. It's showing on Amazon Prime Video. I loved the casting and the special effects and the theme music. (For my piano, I bought a copy of the waltzy, slightly creepy score.)

In the Nature department, Tree Swallows are back and are choosing their nesting sites. During the Spring nesting box cleanout, I was surprised to find absolutely no mice or their winter nests in any of my twenty-five boxes. Perhaps the electrical metallic tubing I used were just too slippery for little paws.
I've put away all of my bird feeders except for the Squirrel Buster model. It excludes heavier diners like squirrels and grackles but allows finches, nuthatches, chickadees and downy woodpeckers. It still has to be brought in at night because raccoons are just too resourceful!

April's ice storm caused a lot of tree damage and for us, a day and a half power outage. I have lots of clean-up work ahead of me, making more brush piles in the process. My rabbits and Brown Thrashers will be pleased.

The new doors look wonderful, and looks like deadlocks, they are so good to have installed on the doors already.,.Draughts, guess there would always be a little leeway when fitted, we have older wooden doors at the front and back and there are gaps on each one. The back door is under a wide verandah roof so not much draught there, and a small porch over the front door. Ellie Mae, I am guessing you hope this is not a regular event!!!And springtime for you up there, here we have autumn days, almost a frost some mornings, but way further south heavy frosts already. Our firewood shed is full !!!
ReplyDeleteLovely to hear from you Jean! Glad to know your firewood stores are ready for your cold months ahead and you'll be warm while cutting out fabric and running the sewing machine. I like to think of winter as my holiday season with indoor hobbies to enjoy. Poor Ellie Mae. It must be terrible to be so afraid of humans. At ten years of age, she won't likely change.
DeleteYour doors look amazing! That is good to read about the draft. We just can't stop ours.
ReplyDeleteWe've a flicker, too! Well, a pair!
I cannot do our fallen tree limbs myself. The crew had to cancel today. Again. sigh.
Good work with Ellie Mae. Good she has forgiven you!
So it looks like I'll put door film over the two East doors next winter. They are really only emergency exits anyway. I think the combination of the two West doors will stop West winds. Also, this very old farm house could use a complete insulation makeover but it's just not feasible. Yes, Ellie has forgiven me and I'm glad I've got her parasite prevention sorted. But what an ordeal!!! As soon as the rain stops, I'll fire up one of my three chainsaws. I like my 14 inch cordless Ryobi.
DeleteHi Florence, I love your new doors! I really like the black caning on the east doors. The colours of the doors are great too. We are embarking on replacing flooring on our main floor. I was wondering if we would have a long wait. Nope, we were told that isn’t the case here. . Fingers crossed we should have new floors by Juneish.🤞🏻Wow, your new chairs have weight to them.😳 I wouldn’t be moving them in the winter either. They look great on your deck. I leave out my squirrel buster feeder too. I fill it with safflower seed. The cardinals love it along with the mourning doves and finches. Thanks for the update Florence!❤️
ReplyDeleteOkay, the next time I'm out, I'll pick up some safflower seed for my cardinals. They are not so keen on the squirrel buster feeder so I'll try to tempt them further. You must be excited about your new flooring. What are you going with? Wood? Laminate? Tiles?
DeleteWe would have loved to do real hardwood as we have done in a few other houses but it has gotten so costly. I guess vinyl plank (looks like hardwood) is very popular now and as horrible as it sounds it looks really nice. We brought home a couple samples (wish I could insert a photo, I don’t know how!) and it looks good. Very hard wearing and with a cat that gets the zoomies and skids and slides on the floors it should last and wear well.
DeleteI had 'luxury vinyl plank' installed in my kitchen a few years back, Robin. I should have taken home samples because mine turned out a bit darker than expected. But it still looks like brand new and is so easy to clean! A good choice!
DeleteOh, glad to hear that Florence! I didn’t know of anyone who had it.
DeleteI posted a picture of my new floor in August of 2018. Here's the link:

I'd forgotten that it has a cork backing. Nice and quiet to walk across!
Thanks Florence, I will take a look. ❤️❤️
DeleteWhat a charming kitchen (I had to take a look for myself, this was before I knew either of you) :^)
DeleteFlorence, your kitchen is gorgeous.😍 It reminds me of my Oma’s kitchen on the farm. Your stove is my dream stove. We think we have a floor colour picked out so we will head over on Monday to set things up. Enjoy your Sunday.❤️
DeleteThank you, Robin! This was the family home where I grew up so I'm rather sentimentally attached. As newlyweds, my parents bought that Findlay Oval wood stove (made in Carleton Place, Ontario). Whenever there is a power outage, it keeps me warm and fed. Would love to know how your new flooring works out. If it's the 'Luxury Vinyl' type, I'm sure you'll be pleased with it.
DeleteWow!! Florence, your new doors look amazing, I love the colors and glass! I'm sure they cost a pretty penny, but they look so worth it - - very impressive I can't stop looking at the photos. 🙂👍👍👍👍. Also love your new Adirondack chairs, that picture looks so inviting. You're not renting any rooms are you? 🙂 Well you're certainly covering a lot here, your new show on Amazon sounds intriguing and the episode with Ellie Mae gave me a chuckle and I'm not sure why. I didn't know she was so pampered! But she is a beautiful feline. And of course I love the bird photos too, Miss Audubon. What a nice post! I'm going back to look at those doors... 🙂
ReplyDeleteThe only trouble with my new doors, Doug, is that they make their surroundings look shabby. I'm going to have to clean, fill and repaint a lot of walls, floors, molding, etc. Sure hope they improve my energy efficiency in winter!! I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy the 6 part series, Good Omens. Very clever writing and character studies. I watched it twice and noticed more details the second time. The special effects were amazing! It was a 2019 Nominee (Primetime Emmy) for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes.
DeleteNice tour through your renovation of doors. Looks good. However the bird photos are best. It's great to have tree swallows in a yard.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the shout out, Red! I do enjoy the tree swallows and sometimes am lucky enough to have Eastern bluebirds as well. I've decided that some of the boxes need a bit more ventilation so I'll take my cordless drill along on the next inspection.
DeleteI just love your new doors, exactly what I would have chosen. Great new chairs and buffers too. Nice to be sprucing the place up a bit. I laughed when you said you didn't mention the cheese or smoked oysters to the vet. Sin of omission but some pets are heavier than others naturally. Love seeing your birds and do you really have a feeder that thwarts the squirrels. Even my latest, the Red Cardinal Feeder, has failed to stop them from figuring out a way to extract seeds; however they have to be quite acrobatic to do it.LOL
ReplyDeleteThank you kindly for the door choice endorsement, Jocelyn. A big decision that I'll have to live with. I'll keep giving Ellie Mae her favourite foods -- just in smaller portions. After all, she's accustomed to a certain life style. Ha! I think I have one of those 'red cardinal' feeders. Is it a collapsible mesh? I've retired mine for the summer but the green 'Squirrel Buster' model that I bought from Lee Valley Tools works well (provided it's not hung near an adjacent branch where squirrels can reach over and tip the feeder towards them). Mainly, I didn't want to extend my hospitality to Grackles. Sure looking forward to the end of this wet spell! So many outdoor chores await!!
